our story

Hypersonic was founded in 2012 by Bill Washabaugh. After a successful career in aerospace engineering designing airplane systems and industrial robots, Bill moved to New York City and founded Hypersonic with a dream of melding his passions into his work. Hypersonic was born to bring together art and technology into seamless creations of sculpture, physical installation, and interactive experiences. Bill and the Hypersonic team are passionate about creating site specific physical works that engage people with their environment and their community, using technology and data to create beautiful new works of art.

Our MISSION

Hypersonic designs and creates groundbreaking new media sculptures and physical installations. We draw inspiration from nature and the world around us, employing art, design, engineering, and data as a set of tools to create works that inspire wonder.  Our work reflects the culture, architecture, and movement of the local environment.

OUR TEAM

Hypersonic has developed a deep understanding of how to create innovative sculptural forms that capture the imagination and break the barriers of what has been done before. Our core team has a diverse set of backgrounds covering the arts and sculpture, architecture, industrial design, interface design and programming, mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering.

Our Studio

The heart of our work happens in the studio, where we have the space and freedom to dream, invent, and create. The studio is alive with new concepts at play and old projects dancing and singing. Every new project begins with the whole team at the table: brainstorming, sketching, hacking, and prototyping. Prototypes are a big part of our learning process, as almost everything we create is unique. At any moment, we may be working on creative coding, sketching, CAD design, embedded systems programming, media generation, PCB design, welding, machining, lean manufacturing, cooking in the kitchen, or making music in the loft. Our studio includes a full prototyping shop and a talented team who are comfortable putting together a microscopic display or a 1,000 square foot sculpture.
