Hypersonic [Art & Design] is a multidisciplinary studio based in Brooklyn, New York, founded by Bill Washabaugh in 2010. We specialize in creating dynamic artworks and exhibition designs that bring together art, science, and technology in inventive and captivating ways. Our work spans kinetic sculptures, animatronics, interactive installations, and static artworks, handcrafted to provoke curiosity and inspire wonder.
At the heart of Hypersonic’s practice is a deep and unwavering fascination with uncovering and interpreting the rhythmic patterns found in nature. Our work draws on the compelling logic of natural phenomena—like the synchronized flashing of fireflies or the murmuration of starlings—to design experiences that resonate deeply and give the mind a moment of calm.
In addition to creating our own original artworks, Hypersonic collaborates with renowned artists such as Jenny Holzer and Kara Walker, with experience design studios such as SOSO Limited and Local Projects, and with institutions including SFMOMA, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and the Museum of Science in Boston. Whether animating a city plaza or activating a museum atrium, we seek to foster moments of connection between people and the places they inhabit.
Our process is site-specific and data-driven, often beginning with in-depth research and personal conversations to unpick the multiple layers of a space and its people. Projects like the Constellation Garden Memorial at UNC Charlotte and Breaking Wave for Biogen exemplify our commitment to creating meaningful, lasting works that contribute to their environments.
Driven by a collaborative ethod, our team—including artists, engineers, architects, and designers—shares a passion for innovation, experimentation, and craftsmanship. Every project is a search for beauty and meaning, a fusion of technical precision and aesthetic expression.
Our art is an invitation to pause, reflect, and experience something beyond the everyday.

Our Studio
The heart of our work happens in the studio, where we have the space and freedom to dream, invent, and create. The studio is alive with new concepts at play and old projects dancing and singing. Every new project begins with the whole team at the table: brainstorming, sketching, hacking, and prototyping. Prototypes are a big part of our learning process, as almost everything we create is unique. At any moment, we may be working on creative coding, sketching, CAD design, embedded systems programming, media generation, PCB design, welding, machining, lean manufacturing, cooking in the kitchen, or making music in the loft. Our studio includes a full prototyping shop and a talented team who are comfortable putting together a microscopic display or a 1,000 square foot sculpture.
